Linux in Nokia

Linux was not widely used in mobile phones until lately but its importance as a mobile OS is increasing as more and more Linux-based mobile phones enter the market. As Nokia is looking at integrating Linux into its cell phones, Google is confident about using it to build Android mobile operating system.

Nokia is keen on using Linux as the role of its Internet-focused devices grows, company officials said.

Nokia has used Linux for many years in its Internet-based phones

and large cell phone like devices accessing the web on the move. "We will expand that range, and we believe that the role of Linux will grow," said Nokia spokesman Kari Tuutti.

Linux, being the most popular of open source OS, has a large developer community which will in turn result in more and more attractive programs at less cost.

Nokia's Chief Financial Officer Rick Simonson said the company has been developing next generation Linux-based products, which are starting to come to the market.

The software platform market is led by Nokia's S60 or the Symbian operating system, which is ahead of Microsoft's Windows Mobile.

Many giant mobile companies such as Vodafone, Motorola, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung Electronics, Huawei and LG are already walking on the Linux road.
