LG GD910 Watch Phone

As mobile technology progresses, we’re making handsets smaller and smaller and as testament to that watch phones stands true. If you ever wanted to play spy or Dick Tracy, the super cop, this is one gadget you have got to have, even if it does cost you an arm and a leg. Take a closer look.

Form Factor
The GD910 is a lightweight watch phone at just 84g. Its 1.4-inch touchscreen (capacitive) is very responsive and just large enough to be comfortable to use. The 128 x 160 pixel resolution also makes it clear to view in all lighting conditions. The leather strap is fully adjustable, so it can fit all forearms. It comes with a box full of accessories that includes a charger, USB cable, SIM card remover and of course the Bluetooth headset for calls with its own charger.

A VGA camera is located just above the display. On the side is where the call Take and end keys are placed and in between is a return key. The rear can be easily unlocked to slip in the GSM SIM card. The device sports 2GB of internal memory so you can easily carry your music with you while on the go. The best part about the device is that it’s IPX4 certified water resistant.

The bundled Bluetooth headset was quite comfortable to use and had no issues with voice clarity (incoming and outgoing). It uses a Micro USB port for charging and has a power/lock key slider that’s quite handy.

Features and Performance
Interface
It runs on a Flash UI that’s smooth and easy to navigate. It offers a variety of watch interfaces including analogue styles. Swiping through the menus and accessing settings is a fluid process. Response time is immediate with no lag at all. You can also customize the menus to various styles that you find comfortable. One would assume that typing messages on the small screen would be a problem, but it isn’t. It’ll take no more than a couple of minutes or less to get used to and you’re fingers will be flying across the screen.

Media
The handset offers an image viewer as well as a music player. The biggest problem with the music player is that it will play through the built in speakers and is quite loud, but if you’re looking for privacy, you’ll need a Stereo Bluetooth headset. Audio playback is not supported via the bundled mono headset. This is a concern as it would involve a further investment of at least Rs. 3000 (min). However, audio quality was not bad at via an A2DP headset. A set of EQ presets are also included to help enhance the audio and you can also create a playlist of your favorite tracks right on the device. There’s no video support of nay kind.

Connectivity
The GD910 is a 3G enabled device capable of HSDPA speeds up to 7.2Mbps. The video camera can be used for video calling via 3G whenever that gets here in a larger more usable capacity. There are no internet connectivity options
or email retrieval support for this device. It does however support MMS. Bluetooth with A2DP support is another connectivity option. You can also send and receive files via the same medium. USB 2.0 allows you to hook up the device to your PC for data back up and transfer.

Misc. Features
The handset-watch comes loaded with all the essential mobile phone features. Those include a Calendar that allows you to set appointments and memos, a Memo pad for notes, Alarm clock, calculator, Converter, Stopwatch, World Clock and a voice recorder. The GD910 also comes with a Text to Speech engine to read your messages while traveling and a Voice Command option to activate certain features.

Battery
For a device of this size, the battery is quite adequate. On a full charge you’ll able to use the handset for over two days, with minimum usage. Talk time averaged in at just about 2 hours which is not too bad. The Bluetooth headset is capable of at least 3 hours of non stop talk time though, if used with another device.

The Bottom Line
The GD910 comes with a heavy price tag of Rs. 39,990 (MOP). While that is defiantly steep, you have to consider the fact that this device is not designed to be your primary handset, not in this day and age of social networking and emailing. The GD910 watch phone is a gadget for the affluent. If you have the unique problem of having too much money lying around in need of spending and you’re a gadget lover, LG’swatch phone should be in your collection. I asked a few people - if money wasn’t an object would they spend Rs. 40,000 on this gadget. I was quite surprised to find that a majority actually said they would.

The essence of the GD910 is comfort and style while offering remarkable technology and it delivers quite well on these fronts.

Nokia Delays Flagship N8 Again

Nokia said it would delay again its flagship smartphone N8 model, hitting its shares on the day new chief executivetop cellphone maker. The N8 is seen by analysts as Nokia's first top-range model to challenge Apple's iPhone more than three years after its launch. Its success is seen as being crucial for Nokia's profit margins. "A single device does not normally have a significant impact on Nokia's ... development. But with the N8 the firm has much more at stake," analysts at FIM Bank says in a note. "The new delay is once again a blow to Nokia's already tarnished image and it could also endanger the firm's Q3 earnings target," it said.

Nokia shares were 1.7 percent lower at 7.74 euros by 0821 GMT, underperforming 0.1 percent firmer STXE 600 Technology index. A company spokesman said the first phones were still scheduled to leave factories by the end of September, but deliveries to consumers who had preordered the phone would be delayed by a few weeks. "In some markets, we had planned to start delivering the N8s to our pre-order customers by the end of September. To ensure a great user experience, we have decided to hold the shipments for a few weeks to do some final amends," the company said in a statement, adding that the N8s would reach consumers in October.

Nokia announced the delay only a few days after the Sept. 15 closure of its showcase event of the year, Nokia World. "This is embarrassing," said John Strand, chiefexecutive of Danish telecoms consultancy Strand Consult. The N8 smartphone , first to use Nokia's new Symbian software, was originally scheduled to reach consumers in June. In April, Nokia warned that the software renewal would take longer than it had expected due to quality problems and said that the N8 would reach consumers by the end of September.

The weak smartphone offering and problems with software were see as the main reasons for Nokia to replace its chief executive. Stephen Elop, from Microsoft, started at his job as Nokia's chief executive on Tuesday. The N8 stands out among its rivals for its 12 megapixel camera but has a slower processor than Samsung's top model Galaxy S and the latest iPhone.

LG has recently revealed a new mobile handset designed for the ladies. The handset – the SH490, is a clamshell and is being dubbed the 'make-up' phone, though in my opinion that title should rightfully belong to the Nokia 7610 Supernova.

The SH490 has a reflective/shiny outer shell that bears stylish and girly patterns and colours - “Smoky Red,” “Deep Blue” and “Pearl White”. It sports a 2.4-inch QVGA main display and also features an external 1.1-inch screen. It comes with a 3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, a media player for video and audio, with 512MB of internal memory with external support via microSD cards.

LG is in the news again this time with another totally touchscreen handset. The KS660 is also their first ever Dual-SIM mobile handset. Other than the lack of 3G capabilities the KS660 is a feature rich handset.

Dual-SIM handsets fare quite well in the Indian market so we can only hope it’ll make it to our shores, but here’s still no official information of the availability or the pricing of the KS660 so stay tuned.

Nokia 5630 XpressMusic

It’s been a while since Nokia has been in the news but that could also be because of LG’s KM900 and Samsung’s plethora of handsets making their way to MWC. Nokia has in fact announced an addition to their music range of handsets – the 5630XpressMusic.

This candy-bar styled, rather simplistic looking handset runs on a Symbian OS with an S60 UI and is equipped with -

This is all very similar to the 5800’s but in a more confined space of course.

The Nokia 5630 XpressMusic should start making its way to shelves by the second quarter of this year with a price tag of about Rs 12, 575 (200 EURO) exclusive of subsidies and taxes and a bundled 4GB microSD card.

LG GB110 GB106

LG has revealed two new entry level handsets that are of course, directed at the low to mid range consumer. The two handsets in question are the GB110 and GB106 candy bar designed mobiles with FM radios as their highlighted feature.

Thanks to the GB106’s internal FM radio receiver the handset is capable of activating the radio in speakerphone mode without having to connect the handsfree at all. It features a 1.5-inch 65k color LCD and 1.5MB of internal user’s memory. It’s equipped with a five way nav pad for maneuvering through the menus.

The second handset, the GB110 comes with a VGA camera, FM radio and microSD card slot that can support up to 2GB of external memory.

Although there’s no word on pricing, reports have it that these two handsets should hit the shelves before the month is out.

Reports are stating that Samsung is gearing up for the launch of an Android powered mobile handset sometime this year. Unfortunately, we are still not yet a target audience for Android as Samsung is planning on launching the device with T-Mobile and Sprint Nextel.

The handset would of course feature a touchscreen UI and include Google-oriented applications like Google Maps, Search, Gmail for mobile and of course a mobile G-Talk application.

As of now there's no pricing on the handset or a time frame of its availability.

The Company is launching the MPower series in the market through its own distributors – SSK in Western Region and Bright point for the rest of India.

The Mpower series of CDMA phones have the capability to inter operate on Reliance Mobile, Tata Indicom and Virgin Mobile. Samsung has recently launched a new handset - The Tobi S3030 slider phone - that’s apparently designed and directed toward the pre-teen market. Of course it would be irresponsi

ble to assume that that’s their prime demographic, considering the release also states that it’s for ‘young adults, and anyone who desires to experience fun and safety features from their mobile phones’.

The handset is available in colorful variations (Sweet Pink, Bright Orange, Loyal Blue, Oasis Blue, Apple Green and Snow Silver with interchangeable back covers) and is reportedly made from non-toxic recyclable and biodegradable bio-plastic. It’s painted using non-toxic paints and non-allergic materials to keep the environment as well as the health of the users safe. Does this mean that kids can safely shove this up their nose, or bite on it without the materials causing them any harm? Hopefully. Additionally, the earphone is also made of eco-friendly materials without any polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

The Tobi is quite an equipped handset that comes with a 1.3MP camera, audio player, Bluetooth (with BT messaging), a 1.9-inch TFT display (176×144 pixels, 65k colors), GPRS and microSD card support. What’s supposed to make the handset so enticing are the GUI colorful themes - Monster theme, Snowman theme and Ocean World theme as well as the interchangeable cover with a transparent portion at the back for inserting a photograph.

It’s a light-weight phone at just 85g so I’m presuming it’d be easy to misplace or break too, unless the company has thought of that and it comes equipped with Samsung’s resident Mobile Tracker software and is made of some truly rugged yet ‘eco-friendly’ material. But jokes aside, the handset does come with safety features that include - SOS Call, SOS Message and a feature called Fake Call. Using these safety features, users can be directly linked to their family members and friends in emergent situations and even “easily escape from dangerous situations”. I’m not sure how, but that’s what the release says.

The handset will be out sometime this month in the Europe sector and could make its way to Asia soon after that. There’s no price mentioned yet.

Samsung Hugo Boss F480 TouchWiz Fashion Phone

Fashion houses are still fighting their way into the mobile industry and the latest to make its break after big names like Giorgio Armani with Samsung and Prada with LG, is Hugo Boss who’s also gone with Samsung. Of course the handset's designs don’t seem be getting any more interesting than they initially were. A few edges trimmed here a slightly larger display there, a few buttons rearranged and voila, a brand new handset that doesn’t look too different form the last.

According to reports, Samsung hasn’t even gone with a new design; instead Hugo Boss has simply opted for a variant of the F480 TouchWiz for their flagship model. The handset will come equipped with a 2.8-inch TFT touch screen display, 3G connectivity, Bluetooth with a customized Bluetooth headset as an accessory, and a 5 megapixel auto focus camera. The interface is apparently going to be customized for Hugo Boss as well.

And keeping in tune with the pretend that the world is not really undergoing a recession, the handset is due to hit shelves in Europe through the company’s official outlets this December for the price of Rs 30,255.

Nokia India has unveiled its much awaited "Touch Music" device, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, in India. Also announced is the scheduled launch of the beta version of the Nokia Music Store.

Nokia has also announced a tie-up with Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, EMI, Warner, Tseries, Big Music and Yashraj.

Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Nokia said, "With more than 300 million music enabled devices sold, and a strong base of over 10 Nokia Music stores in operation globally, Nokia has been able to gain incredible amount of knowledge and insights on what people want in a music device and track important trends on how people consume music. We will continue to break new grounds in this space by building more and better services for our consumers."

Motorola QA30 QWERTY SLIDER

According to reports Motorola has a new 'Q' series device that should be out as a CDMA phone in the US with their Alltel operator. The device, called the QA30, looks quite sharp with a slider form factor that has a bit of a twist. The keypad that slides out from under the 2.5-inch TFT LCD (240 x 320 pixel resolution) display is QWERTY.

The MOTO QA30 will also come with a 2MP camera, microSD card support for external memory, USB 2.0, Bluetooth 2.0, Facebook access, full HTML support as well as a standard 3.5mm earphone socket for the handsfree. There are no more details about the OS, the pricing or the availability of the device. For now word is, the QA30 will be launched only in the USA.

Motorola has announced the MOTO VE66 with enhanced CrystalTalk audio technology, a 5-megapixel camera and MP3 player-like navigation.

The slider device also boasts the first widgets integration on a Motorola mobile device.

Spice D-88 Dual SIM

Spice Mobiles has announced the launch of the Spice D-88 Gold handset.

The dual-SIM facility enables dual SIM usage, and simultaneous calls and messages on both the CDMA and GSM SIMs. This also allows calls to be put on hold and swapped simultaneously between the GSM and CDMA connection without having to re-start the phone.

Sony Ericsson has announced the launch of XPERIA X1 phone in India.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 features a 3.0-inch, 16-bit colour TFT touchscreen with an 800 x 480 resolution, along with a full QWERTY keyboard, 4-way key and optical joystick navigation.

It has not one but two cameras. The first one is a 3.2-megapixel camera with 30FPS video recording with a bright flash that would be used for videos and photos. The secondary camera is meant for video conferencing.

The phone also features 3G, Bluetooth 2.1, USB 2.0, wireless LAN 802.11b/g, EDGE and quad-band GSM, UMTS, HSDPA, HSUPA, and HSCSD.

The XPERIA X1 will have 400MB of internal memory, which is expandable up to 32GB. The phone weighs 80 grams and features a slick arc-slider design.

The XPERIA X1 will be available at an MRP of Rs 44,500.

Nokia E63

Building on the success of the E71, Nokia has announced the latest addition to its E-series range of handsets, the Nokia E63.

"Our research shows that people want a device that deals with both their personal and professional lives, but helps them to separate the two. When someone sits down at lunch, they want to update their social network or browse their personal email account and they don't want work getting in the way of that. It's another great case of technology adapting to the people who use it," says Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Nokia. O2 has unveiled its Xda Zest PDA, thus adding another Xda to its expanding range of O2 branded handsets. The O2 Xda Zest is designed to encourage first time PDA-users to move away from conventional handsets and experience the benefits of using a fully-featured PDA. The Xda Zest has been designed with a sleek finger-friendly touch interface and a 2.8-inch TFT screen making it extremely easy to navigate.

Designed exclusively for O2 by the established laptop-manufacturer Asus, the handset comes equipped with GPS-mapping and runs on the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. Users will have access to their email using Mobile Outlook, while having the capability to easily view and edit Microsoft Office documents in Word, Excel and even PowerPoint. Nokia SuperNova 7100

Nokia has introduced seven affordable mobile devices and new services specifically for consumers in emerging markets.

Estimated retail prices of the new devices range from 25 to 90 EUR (approximately Rs 1,500 - Rs 5,500) with several models expected to begin shipping this year.

The seven new mobile devices launched are - Nokia 7100 Supernova, Nokia 5130 XpressMusic, Nokia 2320 classic, Nokia 2323 classic, Nokia 2330 classic, Nokia 1202 and Nokia 1661.

The 7100 Supernova has a large, high resolution color screen, FM radio and a 1.3-megapixel camera with support for Share on Ovi, Nokia's online photo sharing service, and other photo sharing sites. The phone also includes support for Mail on Ovi, as well as a browser.

The Nokia 7100 Supernova is expected to begin shipping in the fourth quarter of 2008 with an estimated retail price of 75 EUR, approximately Rs 4,600.

With dedicated music keys, a digital music player, FM radio and a standard 3.5-mm connector for headphones, the Nokia 5130 XpressMusic is Nokia's most affordable music phone to date. Equipped with an integrated 2 megapixel camera

The Nokia 2330 classic is expected to begin shipping during the second quarter of 2009 with an estimated retail price of 50 EUR, approximately Rs 3,100.

The Nokia 1202 is developed specifically for people in rural areas and includes standard features like a flashlight, extended battery life, loud ringtones and a phone book for up to five users.

It costs 25 EUR, approximately Rs 1,500 and is expected to begin shipping in the fourth quarter of 2008.

The 1661 is Nokia's lowest-cost color phone including an FM radio and a large color screen. It also supports flashlight, loud ringtones and multiple phonebooks.

The KP152's estimated price is somewhere around Rs 4,900 ($100) and the phone will be available in red and black colours.

LG has revealed a new mobile camera phone, but if you’re expecting a 8-megapixel camera phone from it, you’ll have to wait. Their latest offering is a 3-megapixel slider with a host of features that range from internal GPS with Yahoo! Maps and Bluetooth.

The LG KS500 comes equipped with a QVGA display sporting a 240 x 320 pixel resolution and 262K colors. According to reports, the handset will support external memory

via microSD cards and come with 100MB of internal memory. An optical touchpad is also part of the handset’s features.

Samsung C6620 with Windows 6.1

Reports have it that Samsung has launched another QWERTY keypad equipped Windows Mobile handset (running on the 6.1 professional) Tri Band handset called the C6620. This new slim smartphone is 11.9-mm thick with a QVGA display (not a touch screen), Bluetooth, a 2-MP camera and 20MB of internal memory with external support as well. From the reports, it seems like the handset is more of an entry level type smartphone with average capabilities and lacking in features like WLAN and GPS although it’s 3G-enabled (with HASDPA).

For the moment, the handset has been launched in Italy but it’s possible that the C6620 may just make it to other areas as well. It’s currently priced at Rs 12,700 (199 EURO). This handset will be available in three colors - wine red, apple green and navy blue, which will help add a touch of funk to the handset’s otherwise quite regular form factor.

Casio W63CA 8 MegaPixel Phone

The 8-megapixel camera phone is getting quite popular with Samsung and LG having two models each. Now digicam maker, Casio, has joined in with a handset - the W63CA - bearing their Exilim trademark and showing off an 8.1-megapixel stamp.

The W63CA is a flip phone and according to reports that link to the specs, it has a large 3-inch swivel display that should work like a Tablet PC’s screen. The display is rather high with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and 260k colors. The handset seems to be available in an array of funky colors as well and would be equipped with a host of features including face detection, anti shake et al. It seems as though the Casio W63CA has a dual LED flash instead of Xenon. The handset will also support microSD cards for external memory and there’s about 600MB of internal space.

There’s no pricing yet and though it may never make it here, there’s no harm with a little hoping. With the INNOV8 price tag as high as it is, we could expect a lot higher for this handset.

Samsung has announced a new handset - the I7110 - that is based on S60 and Symbian OS. The handset, showcased for the first time at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London is a slim and sleek bar type smartphone that’s only 12.9-mm thick.

Geesung Choi, President of Samsung’s Telecommunications Network Business, said, "The introduction of I7110, Samsung’s new Symbian OS-based smartphone, is a testament of our strategic focus on the open OS phone portfolio. Based on Symbian OS v9.3, S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2, the I7110 is equipped with a 2.6-inch AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen, boasts GPS with geo-tagging and navigation capabilities in pedestrian and driving modes and comes with a 5MP auto-focus camera with an LED flash that has ‘smile shot’ and ‘blink shot’ functions. Motorola's ROKR EM30, which is a lower end version of their ROKR E8, has just been launched in India. The only visible difference in these two handsets other than the color combos is the fact that the EM30 is without a touch-sensitive and navigation scroll wheel.

The EM30 features a 2-inch TFT display and although it may not have a touch sensitive keypad it does have specific application-centric keys that are activated depending on the application that’s activated. Other features include a 2-megapixel camera media player, FM radio with RDS and microSD card support (up to 8GB). The EM30 also has Bluetooth with A2DP, supports EDGE/GPRS and USB 2.0. You can also opt to use your own earphones since the handset has a standard 3.5-mm earphone socket. It’s been a while since the Meizu M8 made it to the tech scene, but it’s back now and with some exciting news too. The M8 is apparently due for a launch sometime in December this year. The fact that the Taiwan-based distribution company is also planning on an official Indian launch is what is making this a big deal. It's not like there’s a shortage of i-Killers, but this just happens to be the closest competitor... or was it the HiPhone?

The M8 will make its first official appearance in China and then make its way here. Geek IT, the Taiwanese company has commenced retail operations in India so it’ll be no big deal to bring the phone here.

5-megapixel camera phones are now becoming passé. The new "in" is 8-megapixel and the competition is getting extremely fierce. LG has two phones with 8-megapixel cameras and a bunch of other features, Sony Ericsson has its C905 and Samsung already has the i8510 INNOV8 slider, but it seems that was just not enough. Samsung has revealed the next 8 megapixel model - the M8800 - but reports are a bit unclear about the name. It’s either Bresson or Pixon.

The handset looks like it's an upgrade to the Omnia with a similar 3.2-inch touchscreen display incorporating a 240 x 400 pixel resolution. However, other reports mention that the M8800 will be running on Samsung's proprietary OS and not Windows Mobile. Other features include 3G with HSDPA, EDGE, Bluetooth with A2DP and of course USB connectivity. It will also feature built-in GPS functionality and..

HTC already had i-killers in the form of the HTC Touch, the HTC Touch Diamond, and the HTC Touch Pro. It doesn't seem though like those were enough: its latest offerings are, say the reports, two handsets - the HTC Touch HD and the HTC Opal.

In case you’re wondering, the HD stands for High Def and the reason it carries that tag is because of the screen resolution that is supposed to support a 480 x 800 pixel resolution. Yes, WVGA. The handset runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and comes equipped with a Qualcomm 7201A processor (@ 528MHz) with 512MB ROM and 256 MB RAM (+32MB on processor).

The same reports state that the Touch HD will be equipped with GPS, a..

5-MP camera, with no flash though, microSD card support for extra memory and a 3.5-mm earphone socket. According to some of the pics and these reports, there doesn’t seem to be any sort of navigation or scroll pad. Does this mean it’ll be totally 'touch'? We’ll have to wait on that. As of now, it seems this could be one step above the iPhone, with no button against the iPhone's singular one.

The second handset is a refurbished HTC Touch, called the Opal, simply because of its more refined and elegant look. It retains a design similar to the original Touch with a 3D interface like the Diamond. It’ll also be running on Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. The handset will sport a 2.8-inch TFT touchscreen with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution. It supports EDGE, GPRS and of course Wi-fi, but there's no evidence of 3G support in the specs. The handset will also be equipped with a 2-MP camera.

There’s no word on the availability of these handsets as they are not featured on the official HTC websites.

The dual slide phone is expected to be an iPhone killer, and will sell for a whopping Rs 35,000.

Sony Ericsson has forged an exclusive partnership with EON productions, just before the release of EON Productions’ 22nd James Bond adventure, Quantum Of Solace. Sony Ericsson will launch a limited-edition version of its Titanium C902 Cyber-shot in tandem with the movie, with Bond (played by Daniel Craig) using the device onscreen.

The phone, as used by James Bond - played by actor Daniel Craig in the new film - will be available for a limited period, and will include a memory card loaded with a host of 007 content.

In addition, the full color trailer of the film, behind-the-scenes interviews with the stars and exclusive content such as wallpapers and screen savers will be available on the phone and the memory card. Nokia 6210 Navigator

Although you may see it on the shelves in the gray market the 6210 Navigator has not yet been officially launched by Nokia for the Indian market.

But the wait won’t be long as the launch is sometime early next week.

As for the pricing, it’s available for..

Rs 17,500 in the gray market, but no word yet on the official Nokia price. Considering a recent rumor that Nokia has reduced some of the handset prices by as much 10% in some cases.

It’s possible that Nokia may also launch Nokia Maps 2.0 as well along with the phone.

Nokia N96 Dual Slider

According to reports, Nokia’s next-gen mobile computer, the N96, is scheduled for an October 1 launch in the UK. The handset is the upgrade to their immensely popular N95 dual slider. Its form factor looks like a hybrid of the N95 and the N81. A dual slider, the N96 comes equipped with a 2.8-inch QVGA display with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution and 16 million colors.

This August will be three years since the first walkman phone was launched. In celebration, Sony Ericsson has unveiled three new walkman phones: the W902, the W595 and the W302.

The W902 features a scratch-resistant 2.2-inch QVGA display, a 5-megapixel camera, and music navigation keys. It comes bundled with headphones and an 8 GB Memory Stick Micro (M2). It is a UMTS/HSDPA 2100 and GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 phone that will be available in selected markets in black, red and green in Q4 of 2008.
